Who is better to land an Amazon deal – Concerned citizen entrepreneurs or career politicians?

Amazon made headlines this past week by publicly announcing that it was seeking a second headquarters. This second headquarters would bring 40,000 to 50,000 new jobs to the chosen site and over $5 billion in investment.

Amazon outlined its criteria to be met for consideration:

  • Metropolitan area with more than 1 million people.
  • Within 2 miles of a major highway.
  • Within 45 minutes of an international airport.
  • Near top universities.
  • Good public transportation.
  • 100 acres of undeveloped land.

Sound familiar? Well it should because it sounds a lot like Delaware County, PA. Delco and the Philadelphia region is home to over 1.5 million people. Interstate 95 runs through our county. Philadelphia International Airport lies partly in Delco.  Villanova, Swarthmore, Haverford, Widener and a number of other top universities are in Delco and Penn, Drexel, St. Joseph and others are right next door. SEPTA serves Delco and there are hundreds of acres of undeveloped sites in Delco that could be used to develop a corporate campus.

“Delco should be leading the charge to land Amazon’s new corporate headquarters. It is a perfect fit for us.” said Brian Zidek, candidate for County Council. “It is this kind of timid, parochial thinking that prevents Delco from living up to our full potential. I know how to make these kinds of deals and we need work hard to make sure we are considered for this investment.”

“Delco deserves a Council that will aggressively and proactively work to attract the industries and jobs of the future. This Amazon expansion is exactly the kind of deal that Delco council should be looking for and exactly the kind of investment that would grow Delco in the right way,” said Kevin Madden.“It is a shame that we can’t trust this Council to pursue these deals because they are too busy engaging in pay-to-play schemes and lining their own pockets.

Kevin Madden and Brian Zidek are leaders with the business, entrepreneurial experience and skills to bring opportunities like Amazon to Delco. They have the creativity, vision and mindset focused on long term economic development for our community.
